Does Down Syndrome Affect the Immune System?
Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder that is caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material. The abnormality causes a distinct facial appearance, learning disabilities, and delays in development. Heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid disease are also commonly associated with the disorder.
Since the disorder increases the risk of certain diseases, some may wonder, does Down Syndrome affect the immune system?
A new study conducted by the Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome at the University of Colorado School of Medicine returned evidence that it is now being classified as an immune system disorder. Read on to find out about the research that backs this claim.
The Study
The study looked at 4,000 proteins in blood samples taken from hundreds of individuals with and without Down Syndrome to determine, does Down Syndrome affect the immune system? It was based on earlier research conducted that showed the interferon response was consistently activated in the cells of people with Down Syndrome. This differs from non-Down individuals where the response is only activated with fighting an infection or virus.
The findings serve as a valuable clue as to why 100% of Down Syndrome sufferers end up getting Alzheimer’s disease and are more susceptible to immune system related diseases such as diabetes and protected from diseases like breast and prostate cancer.
Interferons are molecules produced by cells in response to a virus or infection. In the general population, these are only activated when needed. In individuals with Down Syndrome, the response seems to be activated at all times.
This activity may explain the increased risk of autoimmune disorders such as leukemia and Alzheimer’s disease. It may also be linked to Down Syndrome patient’s reduced risk of solid tumors that occur in breast and prostate cancer.
Strengthening the Immune System
While nothing can be done to cure Down Syndrome, strengthening the immune system may help affected individuals become less likely to incur autoimmune diseases. There are several ways to boost the immune system. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, sleeping well and maintaining an appropriate weight are all steps you can take to stay healthy.
There are certain supplements you can take that will also support the immune system. Immune Defense by Zahler is highly recommended.
The Zahler brand is known for providing smart and innovative nutritional products. Their Immune Defense contains a blend of vitamin C, Pantothenic Acid, olive leaf extract and other extracts that provide optimal support of the immune system. The product is kosher and dairy and soy free.
Down Syndrome is not easy to deal with. The increased risk of autoimmune diseases makes coping with the disorder even more difficult.
The research to determine “Does Down Syndrome affect the immune system” provides valuable insight that may keep Down Syndrome patients healthier and may aid them in enjoying a higher quality of life. It is hopeful that scientists stay on this path to make some beneficial breakthroughs in the future.
