    Adaptogens to Help You Relax

When we are stressed and in need of some relaxation, we typically turn to caffeine and sugar to help calm us down. But, we all know they aren’t good for us, and they don’t really work. Sure they give us a little “pick me up,” but what goes up, must come back down. That can turn into an endless cycle of caffeine and sugar consumption. Lucky for us, there are better and healthier ways to relax and get through the day, like adaptogens.

    What Are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens are plants and herbs (such as turmeric) that are non-toxic and help the body adapt to stress and exhaustion, so we can relax more easily. They can be used in teas, as supplements, and incorporated into delicious meals.

3 Adaptogens to Try for Stress Relief

    Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that has been used to help boost energy, endurance, and stamina. It can also help strengthen the immune system. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to help with both physical and mental exhaustion. In today’s culture, herbalists are recommending ashwagandha for people suffering from high blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety.

*Avoid using ashwagandha if you are pregnant, taking sedatives or have severe gastric irritation or ulcers.

    Asian Ginseng

Asian ginseng is one of the most expensive and valued adaptogens. Asian ginseng has been significantly studied for its capacity to help the body manage the power of stress. It is also known to restore and strengthen the body’s immune response, boost the growth of normal cells, and help the body’s durability.

*Avoid using this adaptogen if you are consuming large amounts of caffeine for it can increase the risk of over-simulation and gastrointestinal upset. Your blood pressure should be monitored if you are taking Asian ginseng, especially if you have high blood pressure. It is also not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng has been used throughout Chinese and Russian history as an herb to help the immune system, increase energy, and reduce fatigue. It is also believed to help the body cope with stress and improve calmness in the body. Those suffering from anxiety, nervousness, and hyperactivity have been known to benefit from the herb’s properties.

*Avoid using Siberian ginseng if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you suffer from a heart condition, it is best to avoid, for it can cause irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure. If you have hormone sensitive conditions, don’t use Siberian ginseng for it may act like estrogen and make the condition worse.
